CHINA - At the turn of the 21st century, China had undergone several decades of rapid development. It seemed like the dawn of a golden period for China, when individual and economic freedoms were emerging and there was hope that the Communist system would evolve or dissolve into a more tolerant society. Baha'is from all over the world moved to China as "pioneers", living and working among the Chinese people to build bridges of unity.

a Liebermann Family Album, 1999 to 2002

Welcome to the Liebermann family's online album about our life in China. We are Tim, Anne, Taalan, and Tariqa. We lived in Xiangtan, a small city in Hunan in south-central China from 1999 to 2002. Tim and Anne taught English at a small college. Tariqa and Taalan attended a local primary school.

Our album includes about 50 journal entries, more than 100 photos, and excerpts from two books that we helped to create while in China. It portrays episodes in the life of a slightly batty family, experiencing the interaction of eastern and western cultures and perspectives.

SIERRA LEONE - In the early 1960's many young nations were celebrating an end to European colonialization and were learning how to operate as independent democracies. As part of Kennedy's initiative, Peace Corps volunteers were sent to Sierra Leone to aid locally in education, health services, and economic development, and also to spread Western values. Compared to Sierra Leone's more recent history characterized by military dictators, child soldiers, and blood diamonds, these letters provide a snapshot of a more innocent and optimistic time.

by Freddie Liebermann, Peace Corps Volunteer

In 1963 I graduated with a B.A. in Geography and and uncharted future. Although I had no interest in a teaching career, I answered President John Kennedy's call "to ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." In September 1963, the 53 Peace Corps Volunteers who comprised Sierra Leone Group IV arrived in Freetown to begin our two years of service. When we arrived there the population was less than 2.5 million.

In the summer of 2018, while sorting through a cache of my late mother's memorabilia (cards, photos, old letters and her favorite jokes and stories), I discovered the letters I had sent home from Sierra Leone. I had not read them since mailing them from overseas, more than 50 years ago. I found them interesting enough that others also might enjoy reading about my adventures and misadventures.
